Christmas is coming in...

How Does Gisborne Shoebox Christmas Work?

Saturday, 6 May 2017

Becoming a #GIZZYELF and changing Christmas for choice Gisborne kids is really simple. Just follow these steps and you'll be doing something that we think is really important for our community.

Want to know why we do this? I'll tell you all about it here.

Want to get updates so you can stay in the loop, even when you're busy? Follow us on Facebook! Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled on Facebook or here on our blog, or even on Instagram - if we post a #GIZZYELF header, we've got new things to tell you.

But you're here, reading this post, because you want details - and here they are. This is what happens if you're interested in becoming a #GIZZYELF. We hope you're as excited as we are to have you involved!

Step 1. Sign Up & complete the on-screen form
Est. date: Right now

You'll find the form at the bottom of this page, or by clicking SIGN UP in the top menu bar. Pop your first name and email address in there, to be magically transported to a new page, with our complete Sign Up form. Fill it in, and your details be whisked away to our email database (we use Mailchimp).

Step 2. Confirm by clicking the button in the email we send you.
Est. date: Also right now

You'll get a response email from gizzyshoeboxchristmas@gmail.com almost instantly, with the subject line: Your Opt In email. It's really important that you click the button in that email if you want to be involved. If you don't click that button, your info won't show up on our database, and we won't ever know you wanted to help.

Step 3. Follow us on Facebook and check your emails for updates.
Est. date: From now until Christmas

You can follow us on Facebook any time - but why not do it now and get it over with? We promise not to bombard you with cat memes, but we will make sure we let you know every step of the way, from now until our Gisborne kids have choice shoebox gifts in their happy hands!

Step 4. We match you up with a cool kiwi kid from our list

Est. date: Late September

Ok. This is when it starts to get really fun! We work through our databases (that's the names and preferences of each and every #GIZZYELF) and the lists we receive from our local Decile 1 schools (that's the names, genders, ages, and sometimes hobbies of kids who could do with some extra Christmas cheer!) Once we've matched everyone up as best we can - and I promise, we try very hard - we'll email you letting you know who you are shoeboxing for. We'll also post on Facebook and Instagram letting you know to check your emails.

Step 5. Stock your shoebox(es) up with choice gifts, and drop them off at one of our helpful local Drop Off Locations
Est. date: October

Now you're ready to get cracking! Get your kids involved, your siblings, your mokos, your parents, your students, your rugby club, your netball girls - everyone you know!
One of the most amazing things about being involved in a project like this is how good it feels to give. Just doing something kind for someone else is a huge thing, and we hope you have an awesome time doing it.
Not sure what to buy? Check in with us on Facebook, and we'll share ideas from other #GIZZYELF shoeboxes, and from our much bigger siblings at Auckland Shoebox Christmas and Wellington Shoebox Christmas.
Not sure how much to spend? Check out our FAQs right here for common questions everyone asks.
We'll also post the Drop Off Locations, addresses and hours when we have those locked in for 2017.

Step 6. We start delivering your awesome shoeboxes across Gisborne
Est. date: Early December

We aim to have all shoeboxes delivered to our Decile 1 schools in the first week of December, allowing plenty of time before school is out for the year. We'll keep you posted as we move from school to school!

... So that's it! That's how it all works - come and get involved by signing up here! Our goal is to provide 250 cool local little ones with some extra Christmas cheer this year - and you are the one that makes all the difference.

Tips & Tricks for a #GIZZYELF

Sunday, 30 April 2017

Us kiwis are a helpful lot!

We've only been 'open' for a day and we've already had heaps of cool local friends share tips and tricks, problems and solutions, advice and offers that you can use when you join Gisborne Shoebox Christmas as a #GIZZYELF.

Excited? We are! Every time one of these tips comes up, we'll add it below. I'll even try and add them in some kind of order, because order is my jam. So welcome to:

the neverending list of #GIZZYELF tricks.

Check back whenever you want, we'll be here! And if you've got a tip to share, you can put it in the comments or on our FB page and we'll hopefully find it soon!

P.S. We also have an FAQ page for the most commonly asked questions. This page you're on right now is more for random tips and tricks we couldn't fit anywhere else. Happy reading!

  1.  Number One Shoes on Gladstone Road will give you empty shoeboxes for free - From Rina
  2. Be careful buying wrapping paper for your shoebox from the $2 Shops in town. One roll isn't enough to wrap a shoebox up. The wrapping paper at Dollar Dream on Gladstone is a good amount though - From TeAtaiti
  3. If you follow Wellington Shoebox Christmas or Auckland Shoebox Christmas, you can see pics posted by last years elves to help you get ideas - From Letty
